Lionel Messi uniforms to test the restriction on away shirts for Paraguay.

Ahead of Thursday’s South American World Cup 2026 qualifier, the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) banned opposition shirts, but Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is certain that Lionel Messi jerseys will be in the home section. The home crowd is being warned by APF manager Fernando Villasboa to wear only Paraguayan shirts for Thursday’s match between Argentina and Paraguay at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asuncion. No jerseys from Argentina, Argentine clubs, or clubs with the names of players from other nations will be permitted.

“The jersey from the opposing team will not be permitted. There is nothing wrong with Messi. We value each football player’s career. Simply said, the home field is crucial to us,” Villasboa stated during a press conference on Wednesday. “I have nothing to do with the T-shirt ban,” stated Gustavo Alfaro, the coach of Paraguay. I was unaware of that. The goal, in my opinion, is to lessen the potential for confrontation.

Messi is our rival tomorrow, I wish him the best game of his life against Peru, but not tomorrow,” he stated. However, Scaloni asserts that Argentina’s No. 10, the country’s all-time leading scorer and World Cup champion, has a much greater global impact. It seems sense that every Paraguayan football player and fan would like to assume the uniform of their country. “There will be Argentina shirts, but Leo [Messi] is stronger than all of that,” Scaloni stated during a news conference on Wednesday.

“That does not imply that they do not back Paraguay. It’s wonderful, in my opinion, that football fans recognize him. And you don’t automatically become an Argentina supporter just because you own a jersey. With 22 points, Argentina leads the South American rankings by three points over Colombia. On November 19, they will host Peru following the Paraguay game.

Greece, Athens — As England’s temporary manager, Lee Carsley mocked the idea that he could make any kind of impact last week, but he is now only one game away from saving Thomas Tuchel from a terrible situation. Those who didn’t feel able or ready to travel to Athens were the main focus of Thursday’s thrilling 3-0 victory against Greece. Tuchel, England’s next permanent head coach, will take over as Gareth Southgate’s permanent replacement on January 1.

No fewer than nine players were left out of the squad for these two UEFA Nations League games, despite the immediate task of defeating Greece by a minimum two-goal margin to put promotion to the competition’s top tier back in their own hands. This decision may have been influenced in part by Tuchel’s absence, but only those involved will ever know the full truth.
