A WhatsApp notification from my mum
“Internet man! How was your day?” she wrote.
Mum is back again.🤦♂️
Ever since I went into copywriting in 2020, I’ve tried my best to explain to my mum what I do.
But no matter how I explain, she never gets it.
So, the only thing she understands is that I work on the Internet.
Hence her nickname for me, “Internet Man” or sometimes “Computer Guru” cos I’m always on my laptop.
Which doesn’t work out well for me cos she somehow thinks I can perform any magic with my computer
For instance, tomorrow’s her birthday, and she wanted me to help her edit some pictures.
Sure, it was something as simple as removing the background from one of her pictures.
I quickly used some websites I found online and sent it back to her without the background almost immediately.
“Wao! This is so good. Hmm! Computer guru!” She texted me back, so excited
This isn’t so good, cos I know she’ll call me again to do something else for her.
And yes, I am right!😅
Just an hour before writing this, she wanted me to do some video editing for her.
I’ll take her pictures, put them together in one video, and put a song of her choosing.
MUM! I’M A COPYWRITER! NOT A VIDEO EDITOR!🤬
I don’t even post my videos online and have never tried dabbling into it.
I had to give the job to my youngest cousin; she likes stuff like that.
I know I’m not the only one that goes through something like this. As a copywriter, trying to explain to “normies” what you do for a living is kinda tasking.
You tell them Copywriting, and they think it’s legal stuff like copyright.
These days, I just tell people I’m a content writer.
Much easier to say without too many questions, even tho my work goes way beyond that.
This is also the reason I try my best to only work with clients who understand what copywriting is, especially email marketing.
Because I’ve had terrible experiences with clients who know nothing about copywriting or emails, and they want me to perform magic, lol.
One thing I use to disqualify any potential client is their knowledge of copywriting.
Nah, you don’t have to be skilled at it. Just know the basics.
So when I write something for you, you would at least “get” what’s going on.
Anyhoo, I have to go to bed early so I can wake up early to wish my mum a happy birthday.
If you have any copywriting job you need help with, buzz me, and we’ll take it from there.
