Why do we require a purpose? In his book The Gay Science, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche stated this:
“Over time, man has developed into a magnificent animal that needs to meet one more requirement for survival than any other animal: man needs to occasionally believe and understand why he exists. His race cannot thrive without this periodic trust in life — without faith in life’s purpose.”
When I read this for the first time, I finally understood why we need purpose.
In life, we must have some degree of trust. Living, eating, working, and having children is insufficient.
Why are we here? Why does it matter?
Seeking purpose!
Each of us is taking part in this enormous rat race. We get up, go to work, eat, rest, and so on.
But when we take a moment to breathe, we have to face the hard fact that most of us aren’t really doing anything.
We are running like hamsters on the wheel, hence attaining very little since we are furiously moving.
Well, that is because something very important is missing: a purpose.
