As I pen down my thoughts, a whirlwind of memories from my twenties floods my mind. This decade has been nothing short of transformative, filled with moments of joy, struggle, growth, and endless learning. Now, at 27, with an 8-month-old baby and an impending co-parenting journey on the horizon, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable lessons I’ve gathered along the way. Here’s a candid look into the wisdom I’ve gleaned, hoping it resonates with those navigating similar paths.
1. Embrace Flexibility and Adaptability
If there’s one constant in life, it’s change. My twenties taught me that adaptability is not just a survival skill, but a tool for thriving. Whether it was career shifts or the rollercoaster of motherhood, learning to go with the flow and adjust to new realities has been crucial. Flexibility has become my secret weapon in facing the unexpected twists life throws my way.
2. Prioritize Self-Care
Motherhood and working 32 hours a week can drain even the most energetic souls. It took hitting rock bottom a few times for me to realize the importance of self-care. These days, I carve out time for myself, no matter how small. A quiet cup of tea, a good book, or a walk can work wonders. Self-care is necessary for my well-being and my ability to take care of my daughter. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
3. Lean on Your Support System
Growing up in a non-Western household, community and family were always central. My twenties reinforced just how vital these support systems are. Whether it’s family, friends, or fellow parents, leaning on your community can provide comfort and strength. You’re never alone in your journey, and sometimes, just sharing your experiences can make all the difference. It does really take a village to raise a child (and maybe grown-ups too).
4. Financial Literacy is an Essential Skill
One of the most practical yet empowering lessons has been understanding my finances. Budgeting, saving, and investing wisely have given me a sense of control and security. It’s an essential skill that I believe everyone should prioritize. Taking control of my finances has given me a sense of security and independence. Financial literacy isn’t just about numbers; it’s about peace of mind and independence.
5. Hone Your Time Management Skills
Balancing work, motherhood, and personal time requires serious time management. Planning my days, setting priorities, and being organized have been game-changers. Of course, not every day goes as planned, but having a structure helps me stay on track and reduces stress.
6. Celebrate Imperfection
Perfection is an illusion, and my twenties have taught me to embrace my imperfections. Mistakes are inevitable, and they’re often where the best lessons come from. Being kind to myself and accepting that I don’t have to be perfect has been liberating. It’s made me a more compassionate person, both to myself and others.
7. Dare to be Vulnerable
Opening up about my fears and struggles has shown me the strength in vulnerability. It’s okay to admit when things are tough or when I need help. It’s okay to admit that I can’t do everything on my own and need a village to rely on. Being open and honest with myself and others had deepened my relationships.
8. Re-evaluate your priorities
Motherhood has drastically shifted my priorities. I used to work extra hours to please people at work, always juggling more things at one time, trying to be a perfect wife, friend and daughter. It turns out I can not do everything and be everything at the same time. While career and personal ambitions remain important, family and health have taken center stage. It’s about finding a balance that aligns with my core values and brings me peace and happiness.
As I step into my next life chapter, co-parenting, I carry these lessons with gratitude. They have shaped me into who I am today.
